A Message From the Director

Dear friends,

As we wait for the final chill of winter to pass, it’s time to look forward to warmer days and the sense of hope and possibility that springtime brings. Spring is also an important time to focus renewed energy on raising awareness and community support around brain health and neurological disorders.

March is the awareness month for brain tumor, multiple sclerosis and brain injury, and we look ahead to Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month in April. These important occasions, commemorated on a national scale, offer a chance to educate our community and celebrate and support those impacted by these conditions.

It also allows us to draw attention to the critical work our clinician-researchers are doing every single day to provide better outcomes and improve the lives of our patients. Hear directly about our research from some of our experts in the "Generosity Heals: The Future of Research at the UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute" video above.

I wish you well this spring and thank you for being a loyal champion for the patients, teams and programs of the UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute.

Sincerely,

Joseph Broderick, MD
Director, UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute
Principal Investigator of National Coordinating Center for NIH StrokeNet

This work would not be possible without the generosity of our supporters. Hear directly from patients and clinician-researchers about how philanthropy impacts our work and improves lives at the UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute website.

Advanced Care Powered by Philanthropy

Renovated family waiting area with furniture and lighting

Farmer Family Foundation supports UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute

A $2.65 million gift from the Farmer Family Foundation will help transform care for UC Health patients requiring highly-specialized neurological care. The neuro-ICU at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center provides advanced, around-the-clock care for critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients.

This donation completes a campaign launched by the James J. and Joan A. Gardner Family Foundation in 2022, completing a nearly $8 million upgrade of the neuroscience floor and the neuro-ICU.

Renovations, set to be complete in 2026, include upgrading 52 patient rooms, enhancing nurse workstations and transforming the lobby and family waiting areas, creating comfortable accommodations so families can stay close to their loved ones.

Mother-Son Duo Collaborate on Mobile App for Clinicians

In 2021, the University of Cincinnati’s Stroke Team developed a flowchart to assist doctors in finding the right trial. Pooja Khatri, MD, thought it would be more user-friendly as a mobile app, but she didn’t have the time or coding expertise to make that a reality.

So Khatri turned to her son, Ajai Nelson, who had recently graduated from Walnut Hills High School and was preparing for his freshman year at Oberlin College.

Research Examines How Stroke Patients Regain Walking, Balance Function

Following a stroke, many people have issues with walking and balance. Physical therapy can help patients recover, but most people will plateau around six months after their stroke.

Patients with better outcomes develop what is called post-stroke sensory reweighting (PSR), the process of the senses coming back and in better equilibrium to improve walking and balance. A new UC study is examining how exactly patients develop PSR during the first six months of recovery.
